Hi, Yumiko. I like clematis in deep colors. Yes, their rods are brittle and easily broken during maintenance, so I use repair tape to keep the upper and lower parts at least in contact. I read somewhere that climbing plants tend to have soft and thin stems, because they do not need to be strong. They can rely on other plants or fences to keep their their body upright, and concentrate on growing faster than their competitors. Good strategy.
