木曽川から分かれた佐屋川の支流である天王川は古くから船によ る交通が盛んでありその東西の堤防に天王川の川幅でもあり松並木が立ち並んでいた。なお東側中ほどの入江になっているところは 昔から川祭りの山車の準備をする場所であった。川の方を向いて右手の堤防は猿尾(さるお)といい川の流れにゆるやかにするためにつくられた。
